A UK Parliamentary General Election is due to be held on Thursday 4 July 2024.
Voter Information
You now need to provide photo ID when you vote at polling stations. This only applies to UK General Elections. You do not need photo ID to vote for Scottish Parliament elections or local council elections.
Make sure you are ready to vote:
- register to vote by 18 June 2024
- you will need photo ID to vote in this election
- apply for new postal and postal proxy votes by 5pm on 19 June 2024
- apply for new in person proxy votes by 5pm on 26 June 2024
- apply for a Voter Authority Certificate by 5pm on 26 June 2024

Key Dates to Remember
- Tuesday 18 June 2024 (midnight) – Registration deadline
- Wednesday 19 June 2024 (5pm) – deadline for new postal vote applications and for changes to existing postal or proxy votes
- Wednesday 26 June (5pm) – Deadline for new applications to vote by proxy (not postal proxy or emergency proxies)
- Thursday 4 July 2024 – Polling Day
- Thursday 4 July (5pm) Deadline for emergency proxy applications
- Thursday 4 July 2024 (9pm) – Last time to alter the Register due to clerical error or court appeal
- Thursday 4 July 2024 (10pm) – Last time for re-issue of spoilt or lost postal votes
How to vote in this election
For this election, voters will be asked to mark their ballot paper by placing a cross [X] in the box next to their choice of candidate.
