Cllr Kenny Macleod, Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Iain Macaulay, Lord-Lieutenant of the Western Isles and armed forces representatives gathered in Perceval Square yesterday (Thursday 6 June) to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The event in Stornoway coincided with “D-Day 80” commemorations across the country. Further information and a breakdown of national events is available on the D-Day 80 website.

Speaking at the commemoration, Cllr Kenny Macleod said:

“Among the 155,000 brave troops deployed 80 years ago were men from across the Western Isles. Today is an opportunity for us to come together to remember and pay tribute to their courage. It is a chance to pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives on the beaches of Normandy, a chance to remember those who were injured and a chance to remember those for whom the memories and physical impacts of the assault on Normandy stayed with them for the rest of their lives. It is thanks to their courage and bravery that we are allowed the privilege and freedom of the lives we live today. We Will Remember Them”
