My name is Machelle, I immigrated to the Island about 2.5 years ago from a country that didn’t have carers, so I had no idea what the job entailed. I was a Business Development Manager in the corporate world when I left to immigrate to this beautiful Island.

When I arrived, I had no idea what I wanted to do so took the first job I could find. Then I decided that I would like to find a job that that makes a difference in people’s everyday life, at this stage my mother fell ill and needed care. The Carers started coming to assist my mother daily with washing, dressing, meals and her medication and that was when I decided this is the job I want to do.

I then started the processes of finding out how I can become a Carer, the Supervisors in the Home Care office were very helpful, I applied and got the job.

This was the best decision I have ever made, the difference that the Carers make daily to our frail and elderly service users is amazing. The folks look forward to the Carers visits and for some carers are the only people that they will see. Things that we take for granted are the simple things that they need support with, and they appreciate the assistance.

Being a Carer in the Community is awesome and you get great job satisfaction daily.
