Continued snowfall across the Western Isles is causing disruption to Comhairle services and is presenting a challenge for the Comhairle’s winter roads maintenance team.
As challenging conditions continue the Comhairle’s priority is the safety of employees and the general public. Please be assured that the Comhairle’s roads team, supported by contractors, is doing all that is reasonably practical to clear the road network of snow and ice.
The work of the roads team is being made more challenging by fresh overnight snowfalls and road surface temperatures that have been below zero since Monday. This morning some roads had to be treated more than once due to the severity of these conditions.
The Comhairle’s Winter Maintenance Policy allows for additional restorative and preventative treatments during snow events, and these measures are now being implemented proactively by roads engineers.
The current Met Office weather warning for snow and ice covering the Western Isles remains in place until 23:59 tomorrow (Thursday 18 January). With further snowfall expected members of the public are asked to take care and drive to the road conditions.
