The Stornoway Welfare Fund, which amalgamated three existing trusts (Dr J L Robertson’s Bequest, Provost’s Coal Fund and the William Cook Mackenzie Trust), has recently been established.
The Trustees of the Fund are the Councillors for the Stornoway North and Stornoway South Wards. Trustees will meet quarterly to consider applications to the Fund.
The Fund has some limited funding to assist residents, who live within the boundary of the Burgh of Stornoway, with the following:
To help elderly residents of the Burgh of Stornoway with the cost of residential fuel bills (up to a maximum individual award of £100)
The applicant must:
- be a resident of Stornoway;
- be in receipt of the state pension; and
- provide some evidence that they are having difficulty with the cost of fuel for their home
To provide comforts to elderly residents of the Burgh of Stornoway (up to a maximum individual award of £100)
The applicant must:
- be a resident of Stornoway;
- be in receipt of the state pension;
- provide some evidence of impaired mobility or other adverse conditions or circumstances; and
- state what comforts would be beneficial (eg appropriate furniture or equipment, but not something which would otherwise be provided by health and social care services).
To help residents of the Burgh of Stornoway in hard or needy circumstances (up to a maximum individual award of £100)
The applicant must:
- be a resident of Stornoway; and
- provide some evidence of hard or needy circumstances, for example suffering poor living conditions (but not where it is another organisation’s responsibility to improve those conditions) or not being able to pay for essential items or utility bills.
To assist with projects of general amenity in the Burgh of Stornoway which are not already funded
(this is limited to one disbursement to a constituted community group per year, up to a maximum award of £500)
The applicant must:
- be a constituted community group or be otherwise recognised as being representative; and
- provide evidence of the proposed project and its benefits.
