Public Encouraged to Engage with War Memorial Centenary

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Lewis War Memorial. To help mark the centenary Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is encouraging members of the public to share historical information and photos of the memorial.

Those with any historical information regarding the Memorial are encouraged to contact the Comhairle’s Archive service: archives@cne-siar.gov.uk

A commemorative service to mark the centenary will be held on Saturday 21st September 2024 at the war memorial. The Comhairle will share full details of the service once they have been confirmed.

Cllr Kenny Macleod, Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, said:

“I would encourage members of the public to share historical information they have in relation to the Lewis War Memorial. This anniversary presents an opportunity for us to reflect on two significant aspects of the memorial. Firstly, it is an opportunity to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of their country. Secondly it is an opportunity to remember those who played a key role in the funding and construction of the memorial we see today, undoubtedly one of the Western Isles most significant structures.”
