National Gaelic Schools Debate Returns to Stornoway Next Week

DeasbadCeilidh2024

Members of the public are warmly invited to attend the first two rounds of Deasbad 2024 at An Lanntair, Stornoway, on Tuesday 5 November and Wednesday 6 November.

2024 is a special year for the Committee as it will be 25 years since the first competition took place.  The first round will commence at 1pm on Tuesday the 5th of November.

The second round will follow on Wednesday 6th November, again at Lanntair between 11am – 1:00pm and again between 2:30 –5:00pm. The four teams with the overall highest marks will progress to the semi-finals that will take place in Edinburgh on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th November. The committee welcomes back judges Joy Dunlop, Angus Maclennan and Iain MacAulay.

Evelyn Coull Macleod, Chairperson of an Deasbad Nàiseanta’s Management Committee commented:

“We are delighted to be back together organising the 2024 Deasbad. We would especially like to thank Spiorad na Mara for their support in allowing the competition to take place.  Additional funding has been provided by The Scottish Government, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Highland Council, Skills Development Scotland, Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig and Glasgow City Council and Bòrd na Gàidhlig”.

In addition to the competition, a cèilidh to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Deasbad will be held at An Caladh Inn on Wednesday the 6th of November at 8pm.  Music will be provided by Graham MacLennan and Crìsdean MacDonald.

Evelyn Coull MacLeod further added:

“The invite to attend the cèilidh is open to anyone who has had involvement in the Deasbad over the years; former competitors, judges, committee members and of course the public who have supported the event.  I would also like to take this opportunity to not only thank the many funders we have had since the competition started in 1999 but former committee members and school staff across the islands, and beyond, who played a key role in the success of this prestigious competition.  It promises to be a lovely evening and we hope to see as many folk there as possible.”
