Winter Travel Advice
Attention All Drivers In The Western Isles
“LOOK OUT FOR ICE AND SNOW”
The policy on Snow Clearing and Gritting operations within the Western Isles is:
- Salting and gritting for ice and light snow conditions will be restricted to the hours between 6am and 6pm
- The working hours during heavy snow conditions will be extended as necessary subject to the resources available
- The order of priority for treatment will be inter island and main distribution roads, important principal roads and thereafter all other roads
- Salting and gritting on Sundays, public holidays and core school holidays will be restricted to priority 1 and 2 routes
Drivers travelling after 6pm in wintery conditions should therefore exercise extra care for their own safety and the safety of others.
Drivers are reminded that before they commence any winter journeys they should:
- Consider the need to travel, if so, plan your journey
- Check Weather Forecast
- Make sure your vehicle is ready for a journey in poor weather
- Consider what you might need in an emergency
- Allow extra time for your journey
