Scottish Youth Parliament

The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) is the democratically elected voice of Scotland’s young people.

Their vision is of a nation that actively listens to and values the meaningful participation of its young people, and the mission is to provide a national platform for young people to discuss the issues that are important to them, and campaign for changes to the nation that they live in.

Ellie Denehy and Alannah Logue in the Scottish Assembly

Ellie Denehy and Alannah Logue were elected in February 2024 as Scottish Youth Parliament members for the Western Isles.

Ellie and Alannah conducted a youth survey during Youth Work Week in November 2024. This survey gave young people the chance to share their perspectives on life in their island communities and what could be improved. 219 young people completed the survey. Young people praised the natural beauty of their surroundings, from beaches and parks to the peace and quiet of their environment. They also celebrated the tight-knit communities, sports opportunities, and friendly people. When it came to their ‘One Wish’ for the future, the responses were clear. Improved transport, better facilities especially for sports and more shops were top priorities. And of course, in true island fashion, some participants dreamed of “better weather” as the ultimate wish!

As part of their commitment to empowering young people, Alannah and Ellie tied the survey to Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which guarantees the right for young people to be heard and taken seriously. When asked how adults could better listen to their views, young people offered practical suggestions like listening carefully, conducting surveys, hosting discussions in schools, and simply letting young people express themselves freely.
