Fire Skills

Students from the Nicolson Institute successfully completed a ten-week youth engagement programme based in Stornoway Fire Station.

The eleven students, all just moving up from S2, S3 and S4classes, took part in Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s FireSkills programme, a unique learning experience for young people.

The course offered them experience in firefighter drills and real-life work placements, with time spent alongside Scottish Ambulance Service, Police Scotland, HM Coastguard, HIAL’s airport fire service in Stornoway and at the search and rescue helicopter base run by Bristow.

They were also able to develop core skills including problem-solving techniques, basic first aid and CPR, as well as to find out how it feels to wear firefighters’ breathing apparatus and to set up fire-fighting equipment like hoses and pumps. Pupils achieved their Bronze DofE Skill Section Award for taking part.
