What is Community Learning and Development (CLD)?

  • It is a field of professional practice that enables people to identify their own individual and collective goals, to engage in learning and take action to bring about change for themselves and their communities.
  • It uses a range of formal and informal methods of learning and social development with individuals and groups in their communities.
  • It's programmes and activities are developed in dialogue with communities and participants, working particularly with those excluded from participation in the decisions and processes that shape their lives.

Through working in these ways, CLD extends the reach of democracy and widens its scope.

Youth Work

The CLD Team work with young people aged 8-25, providing a range of universal and targeted youth work opportunities across the Western Isles.

Adult Learning

The adult learning team offers, Adult Literacies, Resettlement ESOL, Community Based Adult Learning, Gaelic Family Learning, MULTIPLY (Numeracy)

Community Development

Throughout the Western Isles the CLD Team provide community development support to voluntary groups and organisations involved in a wealth of activities of benefit to their local communities.
