Trading Standards

Age Restricted Sales

The law restricts the sale of certain products and services to underage people. If you sell age-restricted products to a person under the minimum legal age, you may commit an offence under the relevant law.

Trading Standards enforces the law on:

  • tobacco
  • tobacco products
  • nicotine vapour products (E-cigarettes and vaping devices)
  • butane gas lighter refills
  • fireworks
  • spray paints
  • DVDs and computer games
  • sunbed hire

We investigate illegal sales of age-restricted products. This can be reported to us through our partners at Advice Direct Scotland.

Enforcement

It is illegal for age restricted goods to be sold to those who are below the specified age limit and a trader could face a fine and be prosecuted for making an illegal sale.  As well as investigating complaints about the illegal sale of age restricted products, we may also carry out test purchasing exercises from time to time using child volunteers.
