Trading Standards

The role of Trading Standards is diverse and is focused on protecting consumers and helping to ensure a fair trading environment for legitimate businesses to operate within. The team is responsible for enforcing a wide range of legislation and use an intelligence led approach to assess local complaints, national trends and emerging issues. As well as a series of regular field work activities including routine inspections to trade premises, examining goods for sale, taking samples for analysis, responding to complaints about businesses or individuals, making test purchases, investigating alleged criminal offences. The team also provide advice to businesses, assist vulnerable people with consumer issues and work with relevant partners throughout the Western Isles to help to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents and visitors to the islands.
