Gaelic First

The Comhairle supports and promotes Gaelic Medium Education for all learners and operates a ‘Gaelic First’ policy in all settings, making the default enrolment position to be into Gaelic Medium Education. Parents and carers can choose to opt out to English Medium Education within the enrolment form.

You can find out more about Gaelic Medium Education by speaking to staff at your school or centre or by visiting Foghlam Gaidhlig (text available in Gaelic and English).

GME Benefits

GME provides children with a bilingual education, enabling them to become fluent in Gaelic whilst maintaining and further developing their skills in English. Studies show that bilingualism enhances cognitive development, boosts problem-solving abilities, and opens doors to greater cultural awareness. For families in the Gaelic heartland, GME is a cornerstone in preserving the language and heritage that define our community.

Importantly, children do not need to have attended a Gaelic nursery to benefit from GME. Schools and staff are well-prepared to support learners transitioning into Gaelic education at any stage, ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has developed a wide range of resources and videos showcasing the benefits of Gaelic education, along with powerful testimonials from students and families who have experienced the transformative impact of GME.  The Comhairle’s Facebook page, GME in the Western Isles, has a wealth of resources and is regularly updated with events, testimonials and the latest research on the benefits of bilingualism. Further content can be viewed on X and Instagram.

Evelyn Coull MacLeod, of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar said:

“Gaelic Medium Education is about more than learning a language – it’s about creating opportunities, building confidence, and keeping our culture alive. We encourage all families to consider this enriching path for their children, regardless of their prior experience with Gaelic.”
