Peter Mackay from Lower shader, Isle of Lewis, was appointed Scotland’s Makar (National Poet) by John Swinney, First Minister earlier this week.
Cllr Kenny Macleod said:
“I’d like to extend my congratulations to Peter on his appointment as Scotland’s Makar. Peter’s career as a writer, academic and journalist is worthy of such recognition, and I look forward to his work in the role. As a Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Lewis the appointment of Peter to this position is hugely culturally significant for the islands. It also serves as an example to others in the Western Isles of what can be achieved in the creative and academic sectors.”
