Castlebay 20mph Zone

Castlebay 20mph Zone

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is introducing a temporary 20mph zone in Castlebay for a period of 18 months from Monday 21 April 2025 and Monday 19 October 2026.

Castlebay has an existing 20mph speed limit adjacent to the school. The new 20mph limit will cover a larger area of Castlebay, with the addition of a new 30mph buffer zone.

If the temporary scheme has been effective and there is support for it to be made permanent a 20mph speed limit will be introduced through a Traffic Regulation Order.

The Scottish Government National Strategy for 20mph speed limits has placed an expectation on Local Authorities to expand 20mph speed limits and ensure all appropriate roads in built-up areas have a safer speed limit.

The National Strategy and the Castlebay 20mph zone seeks to reduce perceptions of road danger, increase road safety, encourage people to walk and wheel, and create more pleasant streets and neighbourhoods, by providing a balance between different road users.
