A857 Newmarket - 30 MPH Speed Limit Extension

30mph speed limit affecting the A857 road from a point 290m northwest of the most northerly access to the Stornoway Waterworks and then in an easterly direction, to the existing 30mph speed limit adjacent to the Blackwater Bridge; an overall distance of 830m or thereby.

Statement of Reasons

The original 30mph speed limit order, which terminated at the Blackwater bridge, was made in 1992, with the main settlement of housing situated within this limit. Since then, the Gleann Dubh housing development was constructed, with the access entering the A857 outwith the 30mph limit. The construction of Gleann Dubh, the extension of Bridge Cottages and the expanding contractors’ yards created a significant rise in the number of pedestrian and traffic movements in this area.

Following a consultation period, a previously proposed permanent Traffic Regulation Order in 2018, for a speed limit extension, was stalled following an objection.

The start to the works at the new housing scheme at An Allt Dubh in 2022, prompted the introduction of a temporary 30mph speed limit, which has now lapsed.

With the completion of Phase 1, new houses being occupied and the ongoing works, a further temporary 30 mph speed limit has been introduced, for a period of 18 months, to increase safety for pedestrians and other road users in the area. The process to make a permanent Traffic Regulation Order will re-start during this period.

The section of road affected is:

The A857 road from a point 290m northwest of the most northerly access to the Stornoway Waterworks and then in an easterly direction, to the existing 30mph speed limit adjacent to the Blackwater Bridge; an overall distance of 830m or thereby.
