Survey by Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament

Young voices from Na h-Eileanan an Iar have spoken, thanks to a new survey conducted by Alannah Logue and Ellie Denehy, the Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) for the Western Isles.

The survey, circulated during Youth Work Week in November, aimed to explore what young people love about living in the islands and their aspirations for the future.

Through the initiative, Alannah and Ellie, sought to give young people the chance to share their perspectives on life in their island communities and what could be improved. The approach was simple yet effective, asking participants for their ‘Three Stars and a Wish.’

The ‘Three Stars’ highlighted the unique benefits of living in the Western Isles. Young people praised the natural beauty of their surroundings, from beaches and parks to the peace and quiet of their environment. They also celebrated the tight-knit communities, sports opportunities, and friendly people.

When it came to their ‘One Wish’ for the future, the responses were clear. Improved transport, better facilities especially for sports and more shops were top priorities. And of course, in true island fashion, some participants dreamed of “better weather” as the ultimate wish!

As part of their commitment to empowering young people, Alannah and Ellie tied the survey to Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which guarantees the right for young people to be heard and taken seriously. When asked how adults could better listen to their views, young people offered practical suggestions like listening carefully, conducting surveys, hosting discussions in schools, and simply letting young people express themselves freely.

The Scottish Youth Parliament, established in 1999, serves as a national platform for young people aged 14 to 25 to voice their opinions and drive change. Alannah and Ellie, as MSYPs, are proud to represent the Western Isles and ensure young people’s voices are heard.

The survey results provide an insightful snapshot of life in the islands from a young person’s perspective, underscoring both the positives and the areas for improvement. Alannah and Ellie would like to thank everyone who participated and emphasise their commitment to advocating for young people’s views.
