The meeting, which was attended by Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Fiona Hyslop MSP, focussed on disruption to ferry services in South Uist and the impact of that disruption on individuals and businesses.
Prior to the meeting the Cabinet Secretary announced a £4.5m compensation fund to support island communities impacted by ferry disruption.
Speaking on the funding commitment Cllr Uisdean Robertson said:
“The confirmation of compensation for those impacted by ferry disruption is positive. It is now important that Scottish Government provides clarity on how this money will be administered and who will be eligible to apply for it. Without this clarity it is unclear how much of this £4.5 million will make its way to the businesses and individuals in Uist who have been severely impacted by vessel issues and timetabling decisions.”
At the meeting the Cabinet Secretary confirmed that funding would be committed to replace the ageing MV Lord of the Isles within 3 years.
Cllr Uisdean Robertson continued:
“The commitment to deliver a new purpose-built vessel for South Uist is hugely welcome. It is now important that a clear timetable for this project is confirmed and that all steps are taken to ensure it is delivered within the quoted timescale.”
“I would like to commend all involved in organising this meeting for their continued lobbying alongside Comhairle nan Eilean Siar on behalf of this community. While this work is important it should not be necessary. Island communities should not have to fight for an adequate ferry service and Government recognition of the impact that continued and sustained disruption has on businesses and individuals.”
