Comhairle Leader Meets with Navantia Representatives

Representatives of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar met with Navantia, the new operators of Arnish Yard, in Stornoway on 6 February 2025.

At the meeting Comhairle representatives, including Comhairle Leader Cllr Paul Steele, were provided with an overview of the Spanish shipbuilding firm and given a presentation on their current and future plans for the yard.

In a statement on 19 December UK Government confirmed that Navantia’s deal to purchase Harland and Wolff, including the acquisition of Arnish Yard, had been completed.

Since the acquisition was confirmed Comhairle officers and Members have been in regular contact with Navantia with a focus on future strategy and the yard’s workforce.

Speaking following the meeting, Cllr Paul Steele said:

“As a large employer and trainer Arnish Yard is a huge economic asset for the Western Isles. Navantia’s acquisition of the yard has ensured the retention of a highly skilled workforce on island and provided significant optimism for the future. Yesterday Navantia provided positive reassurance on their plans to grow the workforce and their strategy for the yard moving forward.”
