Isle of Lewis photographer launches own business with support from Business Gateway.
A self-taught photographer has launched his own business after accessing guidance and signposting to funding from Business Gateway, Scotland’s national business advisory service.
James Thomson, who has a background in social media and specialises in photography, videography and graphic design, took the plunge and set up his own business in early 2024 after spending time honing his skillset over the last few years.
With strong pre-existing relationships with a number of Scottish football clubs, James’ content largely focuses on the sports industry, which he expects to continue through his involvement in match photography.
Having never run a business before, James approached Business Gateway for expertise and support on the practical steps needed to get started.
Through Business Gateway, James accessed one-to-one support from a dedicated business adviser, who helped to develop his business plan and offered advice on cost projection.
James was also awarded grant funding through the Comhairle’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Grant Scheme and the Outer Hebrides Young Enterprise Support Scheme, which is funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and delivered by Business Gateway. This funding went towards the purchase of essential equipment to ensure the business got off to a strong start.
Looking to the future, James now hopes to branch out into the entertainment industry through photography and videography of music gigs and events.
James said:
“I’ve spent the last few years developing my portfolio, which includes sports and street photography, so I was ready to take the next step and launch my own business.;
“Business Gateway’s support has been fantastic so far, and I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in just now without their advice or the funding they pointed me in the direction of. I’m really looking forward to this next chapter.”
Catherine Macdonald, Business Gateway adviser, said:
“With our support, James has been able to transform his passion into a sustainable business. He already has a strong portfolio which will stand him in good stead for future work, which I’m looking forward to seeing in the months ahead.”
