The owner of a popular North Uist food cabin has expanded her business operations and opened a brand-new farm and croft shop after accessing expert support and access to funding from Business Gateway, Scotland’s national business advisory service.

Based at Balranald Hebridean Holidays Campsite, The Dunes Cabin has served a range of takeaway food to campers and holidaymakers since 2013. Its menu features a range of local produce, including Lochmaddy Bay prawns, Kallin crab, as well as North Uist scallops and free-range eggs.

Having successfully operated the business for over ten years, business owner, Anne MacLellan, was keen to expand the business by establishing a farm and croft shop based at the campsite. She approached Business Gateway for support, with a vision for the shop becoming a hub for local produce.

Anne accessed a suite of Business Gateway’s growth business services, including one-to-one guidance from a dedicated business adviser, as well as advice on funding and on expanding her premises.

Anne also benefitted from grant funding through the Comhairle’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Grant Scheme, which went towards the building construction costs.

The new shop opened in April and features vending machines which are available 24 hours a day, with contactless payment options available.

Anne MacLellan, owner, The Dunes Cabin, said:

“Opening the shop marks an exciting milestone in our business journey. I’m so grateful for the invaluable support and guidance we received from Business Gateway, which has been instrumental in turning my vision into a reality.”

Alastair Macleod, Business Gateway adviser, said:

“I’m very proud to have played a part in supporting Anne to expand her business operations further. I’ve no doubt that the new shop will prove popular with locals and holidaymakers alike.”
