Brand-new Stornoway gym opens with support from Business Gateway.
A brand-new gym has opened in Stornoway after the business owner received expert guidance and support from Business Gateway, Scotland’s national business advisory service.
Launched in August, Warehouse Gym STY boasts a high standard of training equipment and, combined with the expertise of its team of personal trainers, offers a safe space for the local community to grow and reach their fitness goals through coaching and classes.
Armed with an idea to open his own fitness facility and, having identified premises in Stornoway, founder, Jack Renfrew alongside wife and co-owner Jennifer Renfrew started working on making the facilities suitable for use as a gym. The personal trainer approached Business Gateway for support to develop his business plan further.
Jack benefitted from a range of Business Gateway’s start-up support, which included one-to-one guidance from a dedicated business adviser, as well as advice on his business plan and routes to funding.
Through Business Gateway, Jack accessed grant funding through the COVID-19 Economic Recovery Grant Scheme (CERGS), as well as a Comhairle business loan, which helped towards refurbishing the premises and the purchase of new gym equipment.
Jack also accessed grant funding and mentoring support through the Outer Hebrides Youth Enterprise Programme (OHYEP), which is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by the Business Gateway Outer Hebrides team.
Since launching last month, Warehouse Gym STY has been very busy, and has experienced a higher membership uptake than first anticipated. Jack now has plans to develop the business’ range of services to include sales of fitness supplements and branded merchandise.
Jack Renfrew, Founder, Warehouse Gym STY, said:
“Although I had over six years of experience as a personal trainer, I needed the practical knowledge required to take the next step in opening the gym. Business Gateway has been a fantastic support since I first approached them for help and have been instrumental in helping me get my gym off to a successful start.”
Derek Maclean, Business Gateway adviser, said:
“We were able to support Jack through our start-up support services, which have helped turn his vision into a reality. The new facility means Jack’s team has increased space and time available for training, so they can help significantly more people with their health and fitness aspirations. I’m sure the new gym will continue to prove popular with locals in the months ahead.”
