A Stornoway energy consulting business has successfully launched after the business owners accessed support and funding from Business Gateway, Scotland’s national business advisory service.

Launched in October 2022, Muirneag Consulting Ltd offers a range of specialised consultancy services that address fuel poverty and various issues related to the domestic property market. The business provides skilled consultancy services, focusing on tackling energy poverty and providing structured support mechanisms for residents in and around the local area.

While the business’ two directors, Iain Morrison and Stewart Wilson, had a wealth of knowledge and experience in the sector, as well as being skilled in project management, communications, and government lobbying, the pair sought the practical knowledge needed to start their own business, and approached Business Gateway for support.

Through Business Gateway, the pair accessed one-to-one support from a dedicated business adviser, as well as advice on their business plan.

After assessing Muirneag Consulting Ltd’s growth potential, Business Gateway delivered funding through the Outer Hebrides Young Enterprise Support Scheme (OHYESS), which is funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise. This enabled the business to purchase the necessary equipment to improve its services and increase its capacity to take on new clients.

In addition to funding and adviser guidance, Muirneag Consulting Ltd has benefitted from expert digital support from Business Gateway, which has helped to identify areas where the business could improve its digital presence. Website design, social media marketing, and search engine optimisation support have helped the business stay competitive in its industry.

Thanks to the support, Iain and Stewart have gained valuable insights and knowledge about digital technologies that they can leverage to achieve their business objectives.

Since launching Muirneag Consulting Ltd, the business has secured a contract tender with Point and Sandwick Trust (PST), focusing on tackling energy poverty in the Point and Sandwick area.

Iain Morrison, Director, Muirneag Consulting Ltd, said:

“Business Gateway has been a fantastic support in helping us set up our business. The practical guidance was so helpful when it came to crafting our business plan, and the funding has been critical for our business operations. I’d recommend anyone looking to start their own business to approach Business Gateway.”

Derek Maclean, Business Gateway adviser, said:

“We supported Iain and Stewart through Business Gateway’s start-up services, which have helped get Muirneag Consulting Ltd off the ground. It’s really rewarding to have supported a business that helps individuals facing the challenges of poor efficient buildings and rising energy bills.”
