Lewis & Harris Grounds Maintenance

A North Lochs business has expanded its range of services after accessing support and funding from Business Gateway, Scotland’s national business advisory service.

Lewis & Harris Grounds Maintenance offers a selection of local services from grass cutting and hedge trimming to garden maintenance and croft works. It is the only business in the area which provides unique services in rush cutting and the cultivation of vegetable planting areas.

Business owner Donald Campbell,19, launched the business in 2021 after spotting a gap in the market for croft maintenance services on the island. He has since gone into partnership with his father, Don.

Although business was going well, Donald was keen to expand Lewis & Harris Grounds Maintenance’s offering and approached Business Gateway in 2022 for help.

He benefitted from Business Gateway’s growth business services, including one-to-one expert guidance from a dedicated business adviser, which was essential to help him develop his business plan and put in place a solid growth strategy for the future.

Donald also benefitted from advice on funding and was successfully awarded grant support through the Comhairle’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Grant Scheme (CERGS).

This funding helped Donald purchase additional equipment and access the training needed to use them, which has allowed him to expand Lewis & Harris Grounds Maintenance’s services to include flail mowing and removal of croft weeds with a brand-new weed wiper, purchased with the grant.

Lewis & Harris Grounds Maintenance can now provide a full list of services including chainsaw work, pressure washing, leaf cleaning, fence painting, and gutter cleaning.
