An ecological construction business based in South Uist has enjoyed a successful launch, with Business Gateway, Scotland’s national business advisory service, on hand to provide support.

7-22 Systems was founded by Uist-based architects, who set up the business in response to the practical and design challenges of delivering high quality and environmentally sustainable buildings. Following successful prototyping and testing, they have now taken their innovative construction system to market.

The three founders, who are all senior members of Fraser Architecture LLP, set up the business to deliver their in-house designed construction process and system – an innovative building solution that is future-proofed for market leading environmental performance, with high quality architect-led design on all projects.

The process and system ensure that 7-22 Systems meets the insulation requirements for recently introduced and future enhanced building standards as Scotland moves towards Net Zero.

Following the launch of the business in early 2022, the founders received one-to-one support from a dedicated Business Gateway adviser, which included advice on their business plan.

Through Business Gateway Outer Hebrides, the business also received grant funding through the COVID-19 Economic Recovery Grant Scheme (CERGS). This support helped with the purchase of essential equipment which will assist with ongoing research and development work.

The first 7-22 Systems domestic building has recently been completed in Uist, and the second, also in Uist, is currently on site with work ongoing. 7-22 Systems now employs two full-time experienced joiners, one full-time innovation production role and two part-time construction workers.

Alex Durie, co-founder, 7-22 Systems, said:

“We had worked as architects for many years in the Outer Hebrides and were keen to explore better ways to build, particularly in response to the emerging issues association with the current climate.  Business Gateway has been a fantastic support since we launched our business. The start-up advice we received has really helped us to future-proof our operations, and the grant funding we received will help us with research to help us continue to grow.”

Derek Maclean, Business Gateway adviser, said:

“It’s always rewarding to support a business that has identified a clear gap in the market, not least one that has such strong sustainability principles at its core. We were able to support the team on their business plan to outline clear objectives for the future.”
