The Scottish Government’s Short-term Let Licensing Scheme came into force on 1 October 2022, meaning all hosts (existing and new) need to apply for, and obtain, a licence before they accept bookings and welcome guests. This was to ensure a mandatory set of standards that apply to all short-term lets across Scotland.
Since the scheme’s introduction, the Comhairle has processed and issued nearly 1,000 short-term let licences.
A Comhairle spokesperson said
“The majority of short-term let operators have been proactive in getting a licence, which reflects the high level of compliance in the islands. Although many operators struggled with the process, Comhairle staff worked closely with these operators to help them get their licence.
It is important that accommodation is safe as well as ensuring that there is a fair-trading environment for those that have gone through the licensing process. Unfortunately, a small number of existing operators have not applied or submitted a competent application despite several reminders. We will continue to remind these operators to make a competent application as soon as possible, however as they are operating illegally, we have begun referring these unlicensed operators to Police Scotland.
We would remind all licensed accommodation providers, including those covered by a caravan or alcohol licence, to display their licence number on any website or third-party booking platforms.”
The Comhairle has application forms and a public register of the short-term lets on its website.
