A range of Extra Support and Measures (Opens in a new window or downloads a file) are being put in place by the UK Government to help workers, benefit claimants and businesses affected by coronavirus.

People affected who are resident in the Western Isles area and who require additional information or support surrounding DWP benefit entitlement can contact Stornoway Jobcentreplus on 01851 743663 / 743664. 

Benefit Services during COVID-19

Support is also available from the Comhairle for people who may be struggling to pay their council tax. If someone is on a low income and has capital less than £16,000 they could be eligible for Council Tax Reduction. Applications can be made using the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction Claim Form (Opens in a new window or downloads a file) or by telephoning the Benefits team on 01851 822642 to request a form.

Financial Inclusion

The Comhairle Financial Inclusion Service remains operational albeit in a reduced capacity.  Financial Inclusion Officers Margaret Graham (Lewis and Harris) and Angela MacDonald (Uist and Barra) are contactable through telephone and email.  Should you wish to contact the service for any advice or assistance with regards to benefit entitlement, application processes or signposting to partnership organisations, details are as follows:

The Scottish Welfare Fund

The Scottish Welfare Fund remains open offering Crisis Grants and Community Care Grants to people facing exceptional pressures (subject to eligibility).

Macmillan Benefits Service (Western Isles)

The service remains operational and provides advice and information regarding welfare benefits and entitlements to people affected by cancer and their families living in the Western Isles.  The Service can help you apply for benefits, appeal against benefit decisions, access charitable grants and apply for transport concessions such as the blue badge.
