Bernera Bridge

Bernera Bridge

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has confirmed that a permanent weight restriction of 7.5 tonnes is being placed on Bernera Bridge with immediate effect, following the completion of preliminary structural assessments.

Updates relating to the Bernera Bridge will be posted below.

Bernera Bin Collections

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have taken delivery of a small refuse collection vehicle which is permitted to cross the Bernera Bridge under the current 7.5T weight restriction.

As both non-recyclable and food and garden waste bins cannot be emptied at the same time with this vehicle configuration, please note that the vehicle will visit your property twice to collect each waste stream separately.

Scottish Fuels

Scottish Fuels are using a 2000 litre bowser to make fuel deliveries on Bernera.

Kirkibost Pier, Great Bernera, East Loch Roag

Please note that due to the weight restrictions on Bernera Bridge we are presently unable to supply Marine Gas Oil from our fuel tank at Kirkibost Pier. Mariners are advised that there are two alternative Marine Fuel tanks in the Loch Roag area – At Miavaig Pier, West Loch Roag & Carloway Pier, East Loch Roag.

Please use these facilities for the time being until matters are resolved.

Replacement Structure

An illustrative example of a potential replacement bridge structure at Bernera is pictured below.  The Comhairle is working with local contractors and UK suppliers  to determine the extent of works required and timescale for construction.
