Comhairle Youth Champions Support Loganair Year of Young People

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Youth Champions, Cllr Paul Steele and Cllr Norman MacDonald, have welcomed Loganair’s support for the the Year of Young People 2018 (YOYP).

Loganair and local authority partners are searching the Western Isles, Shetland and Orkney communities for 30 individuals who represent the ‘Spirit of Young People’. Orkney, Shetland & Western Isles are to identify 10 young people between 8 – 26 years.

These young people could have: Gone the extra mile, excelled through sport, arts, culture, been ambassadors for their community, helped the environment, been a fundraising hero, promoted the importance of physical and mental health, challenged the negative stereotypes of young people or championed diversity.

A charter flight by The Spirit of Young People will collect 30 young people - 10 from each island group - and transport them to Edinburgh for a Parliamentary reception for the Young Scot Awards in November.

Cllr Paul Steele, Youth Champion for Uist and Barra, said: "2018 has been named Year of Young People and this is a wonderful opportunity for us all to celebrate the positive impact that young people make to our communities throughout the Western Isles. We have several young ambassadors and I do hope that our communities will put names forward for this fantastic opportunity to be recognised at a national level. Young people are an important part of our society and it is great that Loganair are supporting them in this way."

Cllr Norman MacDonald, Youth Champion for Lewis and Harris, said: "In the Western Isles, we have a wealth of talented young people who have excelled in their chosen field, have fundraised for good causes and wholeheartedly embraced what it means to be an islander by going the extra mile to support others – there are so many good role models to choose from and I would urge people to put names forward. This is a very welcome announcement by Loganair and we are very supportive of providing young people with the opportunity to showcase their abilities, talents, generosity and kindness to others."
