Western Isles Archaeology Service

The Western Isles Council Archaeology Service monitors and advises on the conservation and management of the archaeological resource in the Islands. It works closely with Museum nan Eilean to ensure that our archaeological heritage is protected and recorded for the benefit of our current and future communities.

The Archaeology Service is responsible for the curation of the Historic Environment Record (HER). This is a primary record of all known archaeological sites and monuments in the islands.  The database is regularly updated and is available online.

All planning applications are assessed by the Archaeology Service, and it advises the Planning Service when archaeological mitigation is necessary.  It also provides advice and guidance to other types of development, such as utilities infrastructure projects, for both the terrestrial and marine environments.

Additionally, the service liaises and provides advice to heritage organisations, academia, and individual members of the public.
