Business Gateway Support is Stornoway Cafe's Cup of Tea

The Hub Cafe

A local café has enhanced its social media presence and overall digital strategy by accessing DigitalBoost, Business Gateway’s national digital upskilling programme.
Located on the Isle of Lewis, The HUB Café is a family-owned business that can be found within the Bespoke Bicycles Ltd premises.

For the past couple of years, Alistair Glover had been running the café under the Bespoke brand, but the café became a husband-and-wife endeavour after his wife Lida moved away from an office role to pursue an investment in the family business, separating the café and bike business into individual entities.

The café’s extensive menu boasts full cooked breakfasts, hot filled rolls, warming soups and baked sweet treats. The HUB Cafe also offers a selection of plant-based and gluten free dishes to give discerning foodies a chance to try a bit of everything.

Co-owners Alistair and Lida approached Business Gateway for advice as they understood that they needed a robust and dynamic digital marketing strategy to cater the modern consumer, to be able to operate through the pandemic and to put The HUB Café on the map. As well as 1:1 advice and cyber security support, the team has improved its internal digital capabilities and streamlined internal operations by rolling out digital invoicing, templates and cloud-based systems.

Through the DigitalBoost service, Alistair and Lida received 1:1 advice from a digital expert and a full, comprehensive digital health check which identified ways to improve performance and profit. As a result, the ambitious couple can continue working with the service on the development of a new EPOS and online ordering system for takeaways in a bid to reach more customers, as the demand for their delicious menu grows.

Lida Glover, Director, The HUB Café, said: “Not only did Business Gateway help us improve our digital offering, but our adviser Derek also helped us overhaul our online presence, providing solid advice to effectively manage our social media platforms going forward.

“Maintaining a hospitality business in the middle of a pandemic has proved challenging, and while we have had to navigate various restrictions, Business Gateway’s continued guidance and DigitalBoost support has been invaluable during these difficult times. We are so excited to be able to serve all our wonderful customers.”

Derek Maclean, Business Gateway adviser, said: “The best part of my job as an adviser is helping business owners such as Alastair and Lida, who have passion coupled with a business idea, and equipping them with the skills necessary to get their venture off the ground.

“Following a tailored package of support, including essential DigitalBoost resources, The HUB Café has been able to integrate digital processes into their operations, delivering efficiencies raising their brand awareness with a fresh social media strategy. The business has secured a captive audience in the beautiful Lews Castle Grounds and I’m sure the delicious baked goods will continue to be well received by residents, and hopefully visitors to the island, as restrictions continue to ease.”
