Roads Maintenance (Winter Gritting)
Snow Clearance and Gritting Schedules
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar as Roads Authority for the Western Isles endeavour to maintain the public road network in a condition that allows safe movement of traffic in winter conditions.
The Comhairle has over the years developed a Winter Maintenance Policy (6.4MB) (Opens in a new window or downloads a file) to enable them to manage how the service is delivered.
The policy details road Priorities and Target Times for Gritting. It should be noted that in the event of adverse conditions treatment may be delayed. Remember roads may not be free of ice or snow even after treatment.

Road Cameras
As part of our winter operations, the Comhairle maintain cameras on the Clisham (near Maaruig road end), on the Barvas road and on the Bràighe:
Drivers should be aware the cameras do not provide information about the state of the road surface and ice could be present.
(The information provided here is intended to be a useful information source for all road users. The road data and the live eye view from road side cameras should be used in conjunction with advice from Traffic Scotland and the police before deciding to travel.)
