Castle Grounds Green Trail, for Children and Families

A new nature trail, for families and children, has been created through a partnership between the Comhairle’s library service and The Stornoway Trust.

The project was part of Làn Thìde, the Outer Hebrides Climate Beacon, which aims to raise awareness of climate change and an appreciation of the natural world and also supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The trail was launched during the Outer Hebrides Wildlife Festival by writer Emily Dodd, who presented two fabulous nature storytelling sessions in the Castle Grounds.

The map was created with the support of Austin Trayner, the community engagement officer with The Stornoway Trust, and illustrated by West Harris-based artist Joceline Hildrey.  The trail highlights the range of trees, plants and wildlife that can be discovered in the grounds and provides a series of fun activities for children and families to enjoy together.

Iain MacIver, Factor of The Stornoway Trust, said; “The Castle Grounds has such a rich wealth of natural resources. We hope this Green Trail map encourages more people and families to explore the walks together and enjoy lots of activities which will encourage a deeper appreciation of the grounds.”

The map is available for free, and copies can be found at Stornoway Library and the Woodlands Cafe.
