Supporting Local Communities in Western Isles
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic communities across the Western Isles have benefited from the work of locals who have gone the extra mile to support their local communities. These groups and individuals have been recognised as part of the Scotland Loves Local Campaign- High Street Heroes Awards.
The Western Isles regional champion award went to Back Community Council in Lewis. Caitriona Morrison and Elaine Stewart received Highly Commended Status and 15 other local groups were awarded High Street Hero Status.
Comhairle Leader Roddie Mackay said,
“It is pleasing to see so many of our local heroes commended for their remarkable efforts throughout the COVID- 19 pandemic. The number of groups and individuals recognised in this campaign once again highlights the strong sense of togetherness present in Western Isles communities. We are incredibly fortunate to have so many high street heroes in the Western Isles.
It was also pleasing to see a number of Comhairle employees recognised for High Street Hero Status. Elaine Stewart – our School Technician in Barra has been recognised as one of two Highly Commended High Street Heroes in the Western Isles area for activity during COVID lockdown and the recovery.
The Comhairle media team and weekly ceilidh team have also been awarded the High Street Hero status. The Comhairle Ceilidh’s have been very well received and we are grateful to the media team and the talented local musicians who have made this possible.”
