Many Island sports clubs are keeping people active during Lockdown through the use of Social Media. Sports clubs are engaging with their members by providing training and setting challenges which can be completed at home.
The Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Norman A. Macdonald, said: “Comhairle nan Eilean Siar welcomes the efforts made by Sports clubs to keep people active and entertained during lockdown. It is vital that people continue to abide by the lockdown rules which are essential in protecting our communities from the spread of COVID-19. By providing online activities these clubs are doing a great job of ensuring people are able to keep fit even in these difficult circumstances.”
Stornoway Running and Athletics Club have been posting weekly circuits to help keep people active. In addition to the circuits the club have introduced virtual racing, the race occurs weekly and requires participants to run 3km or 5km.
Stornoway Athletics and Running Club member Michael Macmillan said: “I am really enjoying the online activities, the circuits have been challenging and it’s been a good way to interact with fellow club members safely. I am also looking forward to trying out the virtual racing which will give us a chance to race competitively; anyone interested can check it out on our page.”
The Lewis and Harris Football Assosciation has been encouraging players across the Western Isles to keep fit by running a 5k competition online. The competition has over fifty entries and has showcased the high levels of fitness amongst Island footballers.
Local Footballer Isabelle Bain said: “I think the 5k challenge is a really good idea. Lots of people, myself included, have turned to running as a way of keeping fit during the lockdown. The 5k challenge makes it more interesting as you can see other runners’ times and see how well you’re doing in comparison. It gives an incentive to push harder and improve your time so you can move up the rankings on the league table, anyone wishing to take part can submit their times and the team they are representing to the Lewis and Harris Football Association Page.”
