Bagpipes Galore

There are now around 30 pipers across Lewis and Harris Schools, many of whom are members of the Lewis and Harris Youth Pipe Band.

LHYPB intends to compete at the Scottish Schools’ Pipe Band Championships, held in Livingston on the 10th or March. Over 65 bands participate in the event which has a range of options such as: quartets for beginners, a 'freestyle' for a fusion of music styles and instruments as well as the regular Pipe Band competition. The Lewis and Harris Schools’ Band won 3rd place in the Debut A Section the first time they competed in 2016 in the competition and it is hoped that they will improve on this performance in 2019.

Recently, the band was delighted to receive a loan of 20 sets of pipes from the Scottish Schools’ Pipe Band Trust. The SSPBT’s aim is to secure Scotland’s unique musical heritage by developing state school pipe bands across the length and breadth of Scotland.  The loan of pipes is being offered to members of the band for a 3 year period with an option to buy the sets at an affordable rate thereafter.  LHYPB are very grateful to the SSPBT for this and other initiatives which allow the band to continue to grow.
