Trading Standards Advice
Trading Standards are issuing a timely reminder to both individuals and local groups in the Western Isles regarding the requirement of a market operators licence for circumstances where goods are offered for sale to the public by more than one seller.
A licence is not required if all the proceeds are for charitable purposes. However a licence is required for example, where an individual, charity or community group organises a sale but some or all of the sellers are in business. This includes sellers who are home and craft producers.
Sellers have to comply with consumer legislation, and many products such as foodstuffs and toys have specific hygiene and safety regulations.
