Library Membership and Joining

Membership of the library is free to all residents of the Western Isles.

If you would like to join a library, bring along some proof of your address - for example: a driving license, bank statement or utility bill. If you are under 16 years, a parent or guardian will need to sign on your behalf.

Visitors may join the library service on payment of a small returnable deposit.

If you are a local resident and just interested in e-resources, you can become a Virtual Member – this will allow you to borrow e-books and e-audio books from the library as well as search through a range of online resources from your home.

To become a Virtual Library Member, download and complete the form below and send it to us at:

Western Isles Libraries
6 Kenneth Street
Stornoway
Isle of Lewis, HS1 2DP

We will then post your library card to you.  If you ever change your mind and want to borrow physical items, you can change to full membership on producing some proof of address.

If you run a playgroup or are members of a sports club or reading group, you can also take out group membership of the library, which will allow you to borrow more items for a longer period of time.  We simply need one member of the group to act as guarantor and look after the membership.
