You can order a Scottish birth, death or marriage certificate (called ‘extracts’ in Scotland) from 1855 onwards or a Civil Partnership certificate from 2004 to date.
We have access to records for the whole of Scotland - but for the current year we may only be able to issue certificates for events registered in the Western Isles. For other areas you may need to contact the office where the event was registered, but we can tell you this if you contact us.
If you were adopted in Scotland and want a copy of your adopted birth certificate, you will need to contact National Records of Scotland, Adoption Section (Opens in a new window or downloads a file).
How much does an extract/certificate cost?
If the birth, death, marriage or Civil Partnership was registered within the last month, the cost is £10.00 per certificate. For these very recent events, we can only provide certificates if they were registered in the Western Isles. You would need to contact the office where they were registered for other certificates.
After one month of registration the fee is £15.00 for one certificate and £10.00 for each additional copy of the same certificate.
If you already have an abbreviated or full copy of the certificate you want, and can produce it at the Registration Office, you will only be charged £10.00.
How do I pay?
Once we have confirmed we can provide the certificate you want, you can Pay Online or by debit/credit card over the phone. Alternatively you can pay by card, cheque (to CNES) or cash in our offices.
